Choir Background

The Honley Male Voice Choir was established in 1936, thanks to the vision of Ben Kinder, a beloved local figure with a passion for sport and music. The family connection continues with Ben’s grandson, David Lumb, serving as an Honorary Vice President. The Choir’s inaugural rehearsal took place on 9 November 1936, at the Southgate Methodist School, which later became the Southgate Theatre.

The founders aimed for ‘excellence in singing’ a goal that remains central to the current Choir’s aims, which are: To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in the art and science of music through the presentation of public concerts and to further chosen charities through the making of grants and donations. This is all achieved while fostering a sense of friendship and camaraderie among members.

In 2014, the Choir achieved Charitable Status (registered Charity No: 1158453).

The Choir navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 by holding weekly Zoom rehearsals and undertaking various projects, including a 12-hour online charity ‘Performathon’. During this period, they also became the first male voice choir to create a virtual recording of ‘Loving Kindness,’ a challenge set by composer Howard Goodall.

Today, the Choir boasts 66 members, with a steady influx of new recruits drawn by the diverse repertoire and the opportunity to develop their singing skills under the guidance of Musical Director Steven Roberts www.stevenroberts.net who has extensive experience in music and the performing arts.

In 2022, the Choir launched a six-week ‘Find Your Voice’ programme, inviting men to explore their singing potential without the pressure of performing alongside experienced singers. This initiative has been highly successful, with many participants joining the main Choir. It has now become an annual event.

In 2024, the Choir held a successful performance at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield, presenting ‘Magic of the Musicals’. A similar event is planned for 2026 as part of the Choir’s 90th-anniversary celebrations.
