Back in November 1970, the then secretary of the choir, the late, Mr. Walter Holmes proposed that the choir members’ wives would feel more a part of the choir if they could be involved in some way and where possible help in generating more income for the choir. As you might appreciate, back then, some members did not agree with this new approach – we were, of course, a MALE choir! Despite this the Honley Male Voice Choir Ladies Circle was formed.
The aims of our Ladies Circle are the same now as they were in 1970:
Whilst initially the Ladies Circle was made up, mainly, of the wives of both current and former choir members, over the years membership has extended to include friends of some of the ladies and choir supporters.
The Circle has raised thousands of pounds which have been used to the benefit of the choir. Typically this has allowed the purchase of choir uniforms (the choir’s current uniform included), a significant contribution towards the cost of staging our Christmas Concerts since 2008.
Probably the single most notable of their contributions was in August 1995 when the Ladies Circle commissioned an arrangement by Goff Richards of ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square’ for the choir’s memorable concert ‘Bless ‘Em All’ celebrating 50 years since VE day.
The Ladies also organise events such as Quiz Nights, Silent Auctions, Race Nights along with ‘Ladies Only’ events such as meals out and theatre trips which usually include a raffle (they never miss an opportunity to raise ‘a pound or two’).
The Coffee Mornings, held in the summer and November, have always proved successful events and their bacon (and egg) baps are to die for.
